Yesterday, Singapore Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong arrived at Foshan. Accompanied by municipal leaders Lin Yuanhe, Chen Yunxian, Xian Ruilun, Li Yiwei, SM. Goh Chok Tong and his delegation paid a visit to Guangdong Financial High-tech Zone and Foshan City Planning and Construction Exhibition Hall. The two parties also held talks on how to deepen cooperation between the two sides. During the talks, Lin Yuanhe, secretary of Municipal Committee of the CPC, expressed warm welcome to Mr. Goh Chok Tong and his delegation on behalf of the Municipal Committee and the municipal government and briefed the economic development situation of the city. Lin said that Foshan and Singapore enjoyed friendly relationship and close economic and trade cooperation and Foshan had witnessed rather fast growth in investments from Singapore in recent years. Seeing that Singapore has advantages in city planning, modern logistics and financial service, Foshan, a city vigorously developing the project of Modern Logistics Industrial Park, is hoping to cooperate with Singapore to promote the development of this project. At the same time, Foshan cordially invites enterprises, especially science and technology enterprises from Singapore to start their business in the city.
Mr. Goh Chok Tong said that this was his first visit to Foshan and Foshan had left a good impression on him. The city has a good foundation and long-term development plan and has done quite successfully in many aspects such as highway construction and traffic planning. Foshan has a strong and forcible economic development which shall be considerable in the future decade. Furthermore, Foshan has great space for nurturing modern logistics and favorable potential to become a modern logistics center. The closer cooperation between Foshan and Singapore will not only conduce to the development of both sides but will also provide new opportunities to surrounding areas, thus forming an “all-win” situation.
On the way, Mr. Goh Chok Tong, having seen the real estate projects invested by Singapore, said happily that it was beyond his expectation that those investment projects could develop so well. At present, there are seven projects with an investment amount of over USD$10 million. In 2008, the import and export volume between Foshan and Singaport added up to USD$526 million.
